We are all greener working together – Scope 3 emissions are where the impact is
Industry context: 2021 – transport accounted for 25.65% (109.5 MtCO2e) of the UK greenhouse gas emissions (BEIS, 2023) HGVs made up 19% of the transport total 21.4MtCO2 CS
CS Ellis mission: CS Ellis is committed to reducing GHG emissions in line with climate science (clearly defined science based path to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with limiting global warming to 1.5%) Commit to Climate Science start date in line with IS0 14001 process
CS Ellis SCOPE 1 EMISSIONS: BUILDINGS
- Renewable energy: 752 solar PVT panels installed, 2681m2 348 kWp 82 combined size
C02 reduction per annum 80.065tons / equiv 3673 trees planted pa - Electric car charging: 12 points across 2 sites, using self-generated energy
- Light bulb replacement: 100% across all warehouses
- Off-peak charging: FLT fleet all charged off-peak, from midnight onwards
- MEWA textile management: workshop paper replaced with a closed loop system of reusable cleaning cloths.
Disposable cloths and blue paper towels consume five to eight times more resources than Mewa’s reusable cloths
CS Ellis SCOPE 1 EMISSIONS: FLEET
- Fleet policy: whole life emissions v production burden emissions
- Fleet recycling: end of CS Ellis life vehicles are all redeployed to Africa
- Euro 6: 80% of Fleet Euro 6
- Biomethane CNG Trial: Q3 2023
- LST Trailers: 5 trailers on fleet
- Empty miles: ongoing improvements
- Planning: investigating algorithm based planning tool (est 6-8% reductions)
- Michelin tyres: new vehicles are all specified with Michelin Tyres – greatest tyre life span
- Tyres: end-of-life tyres all recycled into material for playgrounds
- Rolling resistance: checked every 6 weeks by the on-site workshop team
- Vehicle telematics: deployed since 2010
SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS: Palletline
Emissions that are not produced by CS Ellis itself and not the result of activities from assets owned or controlled by us, but by those indirectly responsible for up and down our value chain
Scope 3 emissions are where the impact is, working together is helping us and our partners rethink how we do business
Palletline network overview:
Network optimisation: Utilisation of trunking networks and consolidation
Network vehicles: 71% capacity utilisation / compared to 51% road sector avg
Multi-hub: Palletline model inputs freight to regional depots reducing mileage
Palletline goal: Palletline goal to become carbon neutral by following PAS2060
PAS2060 requires a carbon reduction plan and offsetting
Palletline’s carbon baseline is currently being evaluated
SCOPE 3 INDIRECT EMISSIONS: PALLETLINE

Reusable cleaning cloths
Reusable cloths consume 5-8 times less resources than disposable alternatives
In the workshop, we have replaced all disposable paper rolls and single-use wipes with Mewa’s closed-loop textile cleaning cloths. We now rent reusable cleaning cloths that are better suited to their specific tasks in the workshop and that, after use, are collected, washed, dried, and delivered back to us
Bio-Compressed Natural Gas
Biomethane CNG trial Q3 2023
The fuel supplied by CNG Fuels is 100% renewable and sustainable biomethane, sourced from food waste and approved under the Department for Transport’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) scheme
Photovoltaics (PVs)
13,140 2-3 bed UK houses for 1 day
To date, we have generated 101.21 MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity from the CS Ellis Logistics photovoltaics (PVs). That’s enough to power 13,140, 2-3 bed UK houses with electricity for 1 day
